At Darley Primary School we run a highly successful program called Special Friends. This program has been a part of our school for a number of years and is an important part of the welfare program within our school. The Special Friends program relies on volunteers coming into the school, usually for one hour once a week, to spend time with the same child.
The aim is to promote good social and emotional skills and development through playing games, using a computer, cooking, creating art and craft, puzzles or anything else the volunteer and child are interested in.
A one off, one hour training session and ongoing support is provided. A Working with Children Volunteer check will need to be completed. This is free and the forms can be picked up at the post office. We currently have a number of truly amazing “Special Friends” working with some of our kids who do a magnificent job in supporting them. I want to take this opportunity to thank them for their ongoing support.
We welcome parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and family friends –anyone with an hour to spare to be part of this rewarding program.
